IMPRINTS
In this series, I experiment with printing multiple impressions of the same texture onto a wrinkled piece of translucent Japanese tissue paper. When the inked paper comes into contact with itself, the ink bleeds through the tissue leaving behind a transfer print on the under layers. Like fingerprints, an individuality emerges in each iteration of prints. This play between repetition and singularity intrigues me.
To achieve different qualities of transparency and opacity, I have mounted the printed tissue to different substrates: panel, paper, or another layer of tissue. The pieces are shown in groupings to highlight the variations that occur within the same printmaking process and the use of one source of color - black ink. The works’ titles are borrowed from printing terminology, where imprints, impressions, and signatures all connote multiplicity as well as distinctive characteristics.
